What is the Flemingdon Afternoon Intake Project?

Flemingdon Community Legal Services provides a variety of services in our core areas of service (landlord and tenant law, income assistance law, employment law and Immigration law) such as:

  • Legal representation
  • Summary advice
  • Public legal education
  • Community development
  • Law reform services

Students will assist the intake lawyer and other staff with walk-ins and/or assist with client intake over the telephone.  Students will assist with interviews, determining legal issues, and conduct research in support of those issues.

Deliverables:

Client intake, form filling.

Students will be given a general orientation to work processes and work checklists at Flemingdon Community Legal Services.  They will have the opportunity to learn by shadowing other intake staff and taking on gradual responsibility.  Volunteers will also be provided with training on how to work with and be sensitive and responsive to the needs of vulnerable and marginalized people.

The student volunteer will be expected to work one 3-hour shift weekly, from 1:30pm – 4:30pm, on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday.

Who can apply?

Any JD student may apply for this project, however upper year students are strongly preferred.  A first year student will be considered if he or she makes a firm commitment to attend regularly for the fall and winter/spring semesters.

The ideal student volunteer will be a team player; able to deal with clients with mental health issues; good listener/quick learner/cope with deadlines.

Preference for students with experience or interest in social justice or human rights field, or working with marginalized communities.
