We aim to address the overlapping health and justice needs of our community. Recognizing systemic inequalities in our society and unfairness experienced by individuals living in poverty, we believe that the intertwined nature of health and justice issues affects the basic human rights of individuals with low income. In partnership with our patients, clients and community groups, we engage in direct service, legal education and law reform activities to fulfill our mission.

Project Details

The Health Justice Program is a partnership between St. Michael's Hospital Academic Family Health Team, St. Michael's Hospital and legal clinics ARCH Disability Law Centre, Aboriginal Legal Services Toronto, HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic of Ontario and Neighbourhood Legal Services. The partnership is funded through Legal Aid Ontario with in-kind contributions from all partners.

The Neighbourhood Legal Services is seeking students to draft wills, powers of attorney for property and personal care, and reporting letters for low-income individuals.͘ Clients will be referred through St ͘Michael’s Hospital Family Health Team sites.͘ There will also be opportunities to research and create public legal education (PLE) workshops on wills & estates.

Who can apply?

Only upper-year students are eligible to apply. Multilingualism is an asset.

Prereqs: Wills and Estates. An interest in wills and estates law, comfortability working with vulnerable communities and sensitivity to intersecting vulnerabilities related to poverty, ill health and marginalization, completion of the required training.
